Why Learning English Still Matters in the Age of AI
In September, 2026, students, parents, and teachers in China are debating whether English should still be a required school subject because artificial intelligence (AI) can translate languages almost instantly. The debate grew more intense after a math teacher named Tang Jiafeng suggested making English optional in schools. Although AI is improving, I believe learning English is still important because it creates educational and career opportunities and helps people communicate directly.
Learning English can give students the ability to attend universities in other countries. In the article, “In the Age of A.I., Some in China Wonder if Learning English Is Worth the Trouble,” Tiffany May and Berry Wang explain that English proficiency is still necessary for students “attending many of the highest-ranked global universities.” This shows that learning English can help students reach their educational goals. Although AI can translate words, students who know English can communicate with professors and classmates without depending on a translation tool.
Also, knowing English helps people communicate more naturally. In the article, history professor Gina Tam asks, “Is the ability to engage with global audiences in English going to be a marketable skill for Chinese young people?” This questions shows why English may still be valuable in the workplace. People who want to work with international companies or customers may benefit from learning English, even as AI becomes more advanced.
However, some people believe English should be optional because students have too much schoolwork. The article says that some people believe students “would do better to spend that time on other subjects.” Reducing students’ stress is important, but removing English does not guarantee that their workload would become smaller. Other classes might require more homework and studying. Instead of removing English, schools should focus lessons on conversations instead of just grammar and tests.

AI may make conversations easier, but it does not make learning a language pointless. Schools should continue teaching English. Students should also use AI to help them study English instead of just relying on AI to do everything for them.
