Earth pays the price

People in the United States buy way too many clothes. They wear them a few times and then throw them away. This pattern of buying and throwing away cheap clothes is called fast fashion, and it is bad for the Earth because it pollutes our environment. I think we should stop contributing to fast fashion and instead start buying more quality clothes that will last at least six months.

First, fast fashion wastes a lot of water. It takes about 2,700 liters of water to make just one cotton shirt. That is enough water for one person to drink for almost three years! When we throw that shirt away, all that water is wasted too. That is why it is better to buy clothes that are made of better materials and last longer, so we do not have to keep replacing them.

Second, fast fashion causes pollution. The dyes used to color clothes often get dumped into rivers or other water sources. This makes the water dirty and hurts the fish and plants that live there. Also, clothes made of plastic fabrics like polyester shed tiny bits of plastic every time we wash them. Those pieces of plastic end up in the ocean, where fish and other wildlife eat them. Then, people eat the fish, and the pollution comes right back to us.

Third, fast fashion is made to be thrown away. Stores come out with new styles every week, which means they trade quality for swiftness and speed. Because of this, the clothes are cheap, so they rip and fall apart fast. Kids grow out of clothes in one season. Adults also stop wearing clothes after a few times because they are already out of style. Either way, tons of clothes end up in landfills. Some of those clothes are often still in good shape, but people toss them anyway because they’re not trendy anymore.

So what can we do? We can buy less and buy better. We can shop at thrift stores. We can swap clothes with friends. We can fix clothes instead of throwing them away. We can also donate clothes we do not want anymore so someone else can use them. If we all do this, companies will have to stop using their fast and unsustainable cycle and start producing slow fashion instead.

Fast fashion is cheap and easy, but the Earth pays the price.
