The Dog Who Lost His Smell
On a farm in Los Angeles, California, there lived a large golden retriever. The kids there called him Twig because he was as thin as a twig, but his owner named him Orion. Orion loved helping his owner sniff out pests, weeds, and diseased plants because he always earned belly scratches for his work. On weekends, he hiked with his owner in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Life there was excellent until one night, when Orion was sleeping with his owner, he accidentally fell out of bed and hit his head on the wooden floor. Still half‑asleep, Orion didn’t notice what had happened. and he had no idea his sense of smell had been instantly destroyed. Somehow, the part of his brain that processed smell rewired itself to sense vibrations no other animals could sense. When Orion he woke up, he Orion tried to sniff his owner to show affection, only to find that he couldn’t smell anything. this familiar sense had vanished. He leaped into his beanbag, refusing to be pet and distraught that his best skill was gone. petted, while Meanwhile, his owner busily worked on the farm, worried about the dog’s mental health. Orion was disappointed that his best skill was gone.

Suddenly, Orion felt the ground tremble. Orion stood up and ran out of the farm, running toward the Santa Monica Mountains. The livestock of the farm didn’t barely noticed notice a thing, thinking it was only a normal day. When Orion reached the mountains, cracks formed in the ground and shook harder than ever. He quickly ran back to his owner, whimpering loudly, and tried to nudge him into their underground bunker.

The owner immediately understood and said, “There’s an earthquake?” Orion jolted his head down repeatedly, and they climbed into the bunker. Just as the door was closing, the ground shook. Outside, the barn had toppled, crushing a few horses and trapping some cows. After the aftershock stopped, Orion and his owner climbed out of the bunker and pulled livestock from the rubble, and found a few escaped cows. If Orion hadn’t nudged his owner toward the bunker, s owner had been worried, sitting on his seat in the leftmost corner of the barn, the man would’ve have been crushed. Orion saved his owner’s life.

Excited by his new found power, Orion spent his time running across the village, helping the villagers prepare for earthquakes events, after he was granted a new power. When he joined his owner to rebuild their farm, his owner decided to send Orion to a training facility for good. Orion felt confident, and his owner was felt proud of his dog. After he arrived at a training facility called “Delta K9 Academy,” he sniffed the air. Some dogs darted around the fenced yard, yipping playfully, while others were resting in shady spots sit by the buildings. Water bowls were scattered all over the ground and soft beds were peeking out from doorways with no tight, cramped cages anywhere.

Orion quickly made two new friends: a masculine dog named Atlas and a feminine dog named Velvet. Atlas had broad shoulders and short dark‑brown fur. He moved heavily and quietly, watching everything around him. Velvet was slim with soft smoky‑grey fur and floppy ear tips, darting and sniffing non‑stop. They hung out day after day and collected DoggieTreats™ until it was time for the exam. Only Orion, Atlas, and Velvet passed every test and officially became helper dogs. Velvet specialized in search‑and‑rescue operations, Atlas became a skilled scent‑detection canine, and Orion fell into a category never invented before: Quakedogs.

Now that Orion had made friends, they went on adventures and rescued many people. Soon, Orion, along with Velvet and Atlas, became famous for saving many humans. He learned that even when you lose something, there is still a chance of positive change.
