UK Declares Official Drought Across Wales and England Amid Record Dry Spell

The National Drought Group—made up of government officials, regulators, and water companies—declared an official drought across large parts of the United Kingdom on Monday. The emergency classification now encompasses approximately 45 million residents, with more than 27 million people facing immediate domestic water use restrictions.

“The hot and dry weather is taking a real toll on farmers, and there will be long-lasting impacts on our environment,” said Tony Grayling, Chair of the National Drought Group, in an official statement. Authorities described the phenomenon as a “flash drought,” noting that extremely high summer temperatures paired with virtually zero precipitation caused water reserves to plummet at an unprecedented pace.

The drought declaration comes amid the UK’s fifth major heatwave of the year. The UK Health Security Agency issued an amber heat health alert for nearly all of England, warning of significant strain on emergency medical services and infrastructure. The prolonged dry spell has turned rural landscapes into highly flammable areas. On Monday, dozens of firefighters were deployed to battle an uncontrolled wildfire in the New Forest. The blaze rapidly expanded to cover roughly 247 acres of land, an area equivalent to 140 football pitches. The blaze highlighted the immediate severity of the dry spell, providing a stark backdrop as regional authorities implemented widespread water use limitations.

The agricultural sector faces immediate operational crises as river levels drop and irrigation permits are scaled back. Forecasters indicate that no significant or sustained rainfall is expected before late August, meaning the economic fallout for local farmers and crop yields could extend well into the autumn months. While Scotland and Northern Ireland have avoided official drought classifications due to localized rain, eastern parts of Scotland continue to monitor severe “water scarcity.” Environmental agencies across the UK are now urging citizens to drastically reduce daily water consumption to protect the remaining national grid supplies.
