Topos Azteca Rescue Group Rushes from Venezuela to Colombia
Devastating twin earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, causing catastrophic damage to La Guaira. The first, which had magnitude 7.2, was immediately followed by another of magnitude 7.5; they were only 39 seconds apart. Soon after, on Monday, August 10th, 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia, majorly affecting Cali, Pereira, and Quibdó.
Topos Azteca, a renowned Mexican search and rescue team, spent 40 days in Venezuela rescuing survivors. Immediately after, they rushed to Colombia on August 12th to search for signs of possible survivors.

Topos Azteca was founded after the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake which caused thousands of deaths. Beginning as a small, localized group of volunteers, Topos Azteca transformed into one of the most respected search-and-rescue organizations in the world. The organization quickly became prominent in searching for survivors and retrieving bodies from natural disasters. Rescuers split into teams and searched through different sections of the debris, allowing them to thoroughly check for survivors.

The back-to-back earthquakes in Venezuela killed more than 900 people and injured thousands. Only five kilometers apart, and separated by less than a minute, they to buildings and other structures. However, the earthquakes had been expected. Geologists and seismologists predicted that both the Boconó fault and the San Sebastián fault would cause earthquakes, as strain had been building on them since their previous earthquakes in 1812 and 1900.

Soon after the earthquakes in Venezuela, a devastating earthquake struck Colombia. In Pereira, 66 people died. A building collapsed, causing rubble and debris to gather. “I have 450 books and only a few were left standing on the shelves. You could hear glass breaking and people screaming,” Luis Felipe Molina, a journalist and meteorologist, said. “It was a terrible and terrifying experience.”
Topos Azteca continues to search for survivors in Colombia.
