Why A.I. Slop is Good
Every day, millions of people scroll through social media and encounter videos, literature, or images generated by A.I. While some videos may be impressive, most of the time, many of these videos are low quality and unrealistic. This is often called A.I. slop and has caused many people to be frustrated with the bad content. But what if A.I. slop isn’t entirely bad?
A.I. has become a powerful tool in the modern era, making it possible to create videos and books with just a prompt. This convenience can help people experiment with their creativity without spending countless hours trying to find the right idea. A.I. junk can help people explore ideas in a much faster way.
One of the greatest advantages of A.I. slop is that it makes creativity more accessible to people who don’t have the time or skills to explore content creation. “People get an enormous amount of enjoyment and satisfaction out of creating stuff if it’s low effort. People who want to be creative, but might not be very good at it, can turn to A.I. and find a bunch of barriers removed,” says Eamon Duede, a philosopher at Purdue University. A.I. can help remove the obstacles standing in people’s way when it comes to content creation. Whether it’s time or lack of ideas, A.I. can help you start producing videos and literature.
Another great advantage of A.I. is that it helps you recognize failure, make it less costly, and easier to learn from. With A.I., if an idea fails, you can adapt quickly and try again. According to a research paper from Science Direct on Generative AI Adoption in Human Creative Tasks, “In a pre-registered lab experiment, we assigned 302 university students tasks involving the creation of ideas for generating creative pictures, with a randomly selected subset granted access to ChatGPT. The results indicate that access to ChatGPT improves participants’ creative performance.” When experimentation becomes easier and faster, people will become more and more willing to take risks. Rather than fearing failure, creators can use A.I. to adapt to the failure and continue creating better ideas.
A.I. can also help with honing your work. You can always finish your piece, then ask A.I. to help make it better. “Write first, A.I. second. Rather than starting with AI-generated drafts, she creates her own content and then uses AI to condense or sharpen it,” says Professor Ahmed-Kristensen of Exeter University. Provided that A.I. is used correctly, it will help people make their work better.

While A.I. slop can flood online spaces with a bunch of low quality content, the problem is not A.I. itself. It’s the way us humans choose to use it. People can use A.I. to brainstorm ideas and develop their own content rather than just mass producing bad content. So, as long as we don’t misuse A.I., it will be a helpful tool in refining pieces.

Instead of judging A.I. slop as low quality and useless, we should learn how to use it to help make our piece more detailed or have better plot. Try using A.I. to help with brainstorm and learn from your failures. A.I. shouldn’t take away human creativity; instead, it should help people develop it.
