A.I. Creates Viruses Never Seen in Nature, Raising Hope and Worry

I still remember the first time I saw a virus under a microscope during a field trip. Scientists at Stanford University observed the virus: It looked like a tiny alien spaceship, floating in a group of dots. It was nearly impossible to believe that this organic matter was created almost entirely by AI.
Last week, scientists at Stanford University and the Arc Institute created something even stranger, viruses that don’t exist anywhere in nature. It was designed entirely by artificial intelligence. Their study, published on August 6, 2026, in Science, marks the first time A.I. has invented new viral genomes that actually work in the real life cycle.

Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute in Palo Alto trained an A.I. model, called Evo, to learn the “grammar” of DNA. They then asked it to write new viral genomes. Out of around 285 A.I.-generated DNA sequences they tested, 16 produced real, living viruses in a Petri dish. These viruses infect bacteria, not humans, but the experiment shows that A.I. can design biological organisms from scratch.

This represents a huge shift in how biological research might be done in the future. For years, scientists have been able to copy or modify viruses. However, creating entirely new ones has always required deep knowledge of genetics. Now, an A.I. model trained on billions of DNA letters can generate viral blueprints in seconds. Supporters say this could lead to new medical tools, like better gene‑therapy delivery systems. Critics also warn that the same technology could be misused to create dangerous pathogens. This study demonstrates how the debate over A.I. and biotechnology is becoming crucial.

Evo works similarly to ChatGPT, except instead of predicting words, it predicts DNA sequences. According to the New York Times, the researchers trained Evo on nine trillion nucleotides from animals, plants, microbes, and viruses. DNA has rules: certain letters can’t go in certain places or the gene won’t function. Evo learned these rules on its own. When they inserted the A.I.-written DNA into bacteria, some dishes stayed normal. But in others, clear dots appeared, which were signs that viruses were multiplying and killing the bacteria. Sixteen A.I.-created viruses were fully functional, and some even replicated faster than the natural Phi X‑174.
Scientists plan to test Evo on other virus families to see if it can design more complex genomes. If successful, A.I.-generated viruses could become common tools in labs, the world will also need stronger biosecurity systems to make sure this technology is used responsibly.
