First Artificial Cell Created, Bringing Curiosity To Many Questions

Recently, scientists at the University of Minnesota have created the first ever artificial cell, named SpudCell. Created from different chemical components, it is just like other cells, except that it cannot feed itself or build its own structures.

The objective is to learn more about how cells work, and in the long run, how life first began. SpudCell is being used to study cells and to get a better idea of how our planet serves life [Word choice: “how our planet supports life.”].
The name comes from its potato shape [Small fix: “created from different chemicals.”], and it is the first cell ever created by different chemicals and not a variant of others.
“Although it’s not the first synthetic cell ever created, SpudCell is the first to complete a full life cycle — from birth to division into next-generation cells — after having been created from the ‘bottom up’ using laboratory chemicals,” New York Times says.
It cannot find its own food if it is released outside the lab, and it cannot build its own structures [“differences” from what? Be precise: “SpudCell differs from a living cell in a few ways.”].

SpudCell is a simple cell, which makes studying complex ones easier. According to News for Kids, “SpudCell is far smaller and simpler than a real living cell. That makes it easier to study and change.

“The work could help scientists get a better idea of how life first began.”
It is the beginning of a new era for synthetic biology, creating room to experiment with different medicine and cells.
