Jodrell Bank May Close Unless Funding Options Found

Tim O’Brien is the director at Jodrell Bank, a famous observatory in England. The site is home to the Lovell telescope, a radio dish operating since 1957. But now, the site may close due to funding issues. This comes as a shock given that it became a World Heritage Site in 2019. If funding is still low by April 2028, the dish may stop operating.

16 meters wide, The 70-year-old telescope is 16 meters wide and has been consitentlyhas been operating for 70 years, always being upgraded and maintained. The Lovell telescope was originally called several different names, but was renamed to the Mark 1 and again renamed to the Lovell telescope in honor of undefined, the first director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory. The telescope had many uses, such as tracking spaceships during the Cold War and the famous Sputnik 1.

Despite the lack of funding, the observatory will still be regularly taken care of in case the site is used in the future. O’Brien tells us the observatory has inspired many kids to become scientists, noting that he visited when he was a child.

The telescope is in danger, but there is still hope that there will be an alternative funding source found.
