On the morning of January 14th, Chloe woke up knowing that something was wrong. When she ate breakfast, she felt a drop of sweat roll down her neck. When Chloe looked outside she saw no snow, but instead the sun shining down on the grass in her backyard. She glanced at the calendar again and again, confirming: January 14th.

Despite the month, she went to school wearing a t-shirt and shorts. When she got there, everyone else was in heavy winter coats and snow boots. She also noticed that everyone else was sweating, too. Her teacher gasped when she saw her. “Chloe! Where is your coat? It’s January!”

“We don’t need jackets!” answered Chloe. “Didn’t you feel how hot it was when you came here this morning?”

Chloe’s teacher sighed, “The calendar says it’s winter, so you can’t just pretend it’s summer!” I need to figure out a way to make sure everyone knew that it isn’t winter, Chloe thought to herself. Then it hit her.

Chloe told her teacher that she would be giving the morning announcement and started thinking about what she would say.

When her teacher said it was morning announcement time, Chloe ran to the front of the classroom and turned on the microphone. “Attention, everyone!” she shouted. “The world is getting hotter! The sun is shining, there is no snow, and we are sweating! The calendar says it’s winter, but we all know it doesn’t feel that way, and we are not going to pretend it’s freezing!”

Suddenly, the room grew quiet. The next second, kids began throwing off their winter coats and rushing outside. Even the teachers were smiling. Chloe smiled to herself, knowing her plan had worked.
