Extreme Heat Wave Shrouds Hits the European Continent
On June 25th, over 100 million Europeans were broiled by extreme temperatures which were reaching over 35°C. Multiple countries in Europe were consumed by the record‑shattering temperatures. The heat wave first began in western Europe, where Spain hit 46°C, breaking a 60‑year record. This summer round of extreme temperatures is a result of climate change. Experts have pointed out that the extreme temperature in Europe is shifting from exceptional outliers to the new normal.
The scorching temperatures have not only strained human infrastructure but also ignited an environmental crisis. Wildfires have been sweeping through southern France since July 1st, consuming 2,000 hectares in the Eastern Pyrenees and driving more than 10,000 people from their homes. Meanwhile, in Portugal, a fierce forest fire in the central Wozera region was eventually subdued after over 1,200 firefighters and 400 vehicles were thrown into the effort.
