Hi, I am Troy Qian, a Floridian who has never experienced an earthquake in my entire life. Yet, an article on the undefinedundefined caught my attention for over an hour. Growing up with hurricanes had never truly created a sense of danger, they were easily avoidable. I had always seen all these terrifying earthquakes in movies and cartoons with massive cracks appearing out of nowhere. This caused me to wonder: How dangerous are they? How different were the lives of people experiencing these disasters compared to ours?
The article itself was only the introduction to my curiosity. After further research about the earthquakes, I was shocked to find out the harsh reality of these earthquakes. Venezuela was shoved into one of its darkest times of the past century simply from an phenomenon occurrence not even lasting two minutes long. Tens of thousands of people killed, injured, or missing all in a single day. I used to dread the days of hurricane season, but after reading this article, I have come to realize how grateful I am to be should be living in a generally safe environment like Florida. Although hurricanes may cause huge infrastructure damage, they stand nowhere near the damage that earthquakes do to the most important thing on this planet: people.
Lately, I have been pretty disappointed with my daily boring / mundane, action-lacking missing life, but this article taught me to be grateful for the peaceful environment I was given. There are always others in the world suffering more worse than you. It is imperative to always try take advantage of everything given to you.
