Racing to Rescue After Deadly Earthquakes in Venezuela
On June 24, 2026, a Wednesday, two strong earthquakes hit Venezuela during the afternoon. The earthquakes were the strongest to strike the country of Venezuela since the year 1900.
The first earthquake that hit had a magnitude of 7.2. Only 39 seconds after the first one, an even stronger earthquake hit with a magnitude of 7.5. The areas hit hardest were La Guaira and the surrounding coastal communities, about 40 km (29 miles) north of Caracas, as well as parts of Caracas itself.
The earthquakes struck during a time when Venezuela was already facing severe political, economic, and humanitarian challenges, including an ongoing crisis, flooding, and health system strain. The scale of destruction overwhelmed local capacity, making rapid international intervention essential. According to newsforkids.net, The damage from the earthquake was very bad. Many homes there are made of adobe or brick, which breaks easily during quakes. In some areas, even 10-story buildings fell down. Jorge Rodríguez, who leads Venezuela’s National Assembly, reported that over 1,450 people had died and more than 3,100 people were injured. Many, many more are still missing. Around 774 buildings were damaged or destroyed, and roughly 12,700 people lost their homes.
The United States deployed Marines, Air Force transport, Navy ships, and $150 million in aid to help Venezuela. Latin America also helped. Cuba sent medical teams, and Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico, Ecuador, and others sent firefighters, medics, and equipment. Europe helped with Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, and others sent rescuers, dogs, and transport. Rescue workers rushed to help. According to News for Kids, “They used flashlights and large digging machines to find people trapped in the rubble. Over 275 people have been rescued by Saturday, but the search has become more difficult as time has gone on.
The earthquakes have damaged at least 13 hospitals, leaving the medical system in even worse shape. Some hospitals have had to set up emergency medical areas outside, and at least one hospital doesn’t have running water.
In the future, Venezuela will have to get more donations to build new hospitals and homes.
