Leave Your Phone Behind On Purpose
Young adults are spending more and more time on their phones during hangouts and conversations. People are addicted to their phones, which takes time away from talking to friends in person.
People rely on their phones for everyday things, from directions to texting people. Many young adults especially spend a lot of time on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and messages. Harmony Healthcare IT surveyed 1,001 Americans in December 2024 and found that young adults spend roughly 6 and a half hours on their phone everyday.
When people are talking to friends, notifications interrupt conversations. On average, people receive 100 notifications every day and around 8 calls, per the same study. After a conversation is interrupted, many people lose incentive to restart it. If one person is talking to another person who suddenly picks up a call, the first person might feel offended and less important, walk away, and start talking to a different person.
Having a phone nearby also takes attention away from the conversation. It gives someone an excuse not to talk because pretending to take a call can stop conversations. Some people are less comfortable with interacting with real people and pretend to check something on their phone to get out of conversing with others.
In a survey, people have said that being without their phone during hangouts makes them feel more part of the group. They focus more on what the other people are saying and actively participate more in the conversation. Also, people without their phone felt that they enjoyed the hangout more than those with their phone. On the other hand, those with their phone stated that they feel more distracted compared to those without their phone.
Being without your phone can help you enjoy hanging out with your friends more. Next time your friend group arranges a hangout, be sure to try leaving your phone at home.
