Revisiting Memories
Kate’s phone rang as she was cooking spaghetti for dinner. Peering down at the caller ID, Kate realized it was her mom.
“Hi mom!” said Kate. “How are you doing?”
“Great!” replied her mom.
After exchanging small talk about the World Cup, Kate asked, “How’s the packing going?”
“Okay for now, but I need to clean faster,” said her mom.
“Do you want me to stop by and help get the rest of the packing done?” offered Kate.
“Yeah. How about dropping in around the fourth of July,” said her mom.
“Cool. I’ll be there next Monday around noon,” said Kate.
“Bye!” said her mom.
“Bye,” said Kate before hanging up.
On Monday, Kate drove down to her mother’s house. Memories came pouring out of her mind as she drove through the city where her mother lived. Kate passed by the park with the tire swing and the movie theater where she and her best friends would always hang out. Kate saw the Starbucks where the nice barista would always give them 25% off on Mondays, and the high school she went to.
After two hours of driving, she finally reached her childhood home. Finally arriving at the white two story house, Kate saw the familiar grey roof and the sidewalk up front leading to the door. The lawn was still as green as Kate remembered it.
As Kate parked her Honda, she could smell the aroma of garlic shrimp wafting from the open windows. Her mom opened the door and welcomed Kate in for lunch. Kate finished her lunch and asked what she could help pack. Her mom told her to help move the boxes from upstairs down to the living room.
Kate walked up the spindly spiral staircase to the second floor. Seeing the dusty boxes, Kate couldn’t help but peek into one of them. She saw a picture of her family from when she was five. Smiling to herself, Kate carried the box downstairs.
The next one was a little less fun. There were the report cards of her and her brother. Still smiling at the days in middle school when all she cared about were grades, Kate lugged the box all the way to the living room.
The last box contained a book. Looking closely, Kate noticed the dusty cover and big letters scrawled across the cover. Opening the book slowly, Kate flipped to a page of her and her best friends smiling on Halloween when they had dressed up as characters from The Wizard of Oz. A knock came at the door, and Kate opened the door to see her best friends waiting just outside.
