A group of scientists and researchers, led by the synthetic biologist Kate Adamala from the University of Minnesota, recently created Spudcell. Which is the world’s first fully artificial cell like system constructed from the undefined using lifeless chemical components. This Spudcell, developed at the University of Minnesota, can feed, grow, divide, and compete across generations. This cell was developed in the University of Minnesota. It was developed around July 2, 2026. According to The New York Times, the cell was created to make synthetic biology and biological engineering better.
This cell could possibly lead us to new types medicine and foods. However, it could also lead to future dangerous biological weapons. Though, Scientist Ronit Freeman questions if other labs can easily replicate this cell to create more things. Expert Becky Mackelprang explains how this cell could either lead us to greater goods or worse things because if misused, it can cause lots of disruption. Dr. Tom Inglesby says something similar, saying how if this cell is poorly engineered, it can harm ecosystems a lot.
Kate Adamala originally told her team to just name the cell a “potato for all I care,” instead of naming it after her. But, the scientists decided to settle with the name Spudcell because it references the Sputnik Satellite.
