The Major League Baseball Sparked Controversy After Warning a Couple of San Francisco Giants Players For Writing Bible Verses on Pride Themed Caps
Abby A.
Imagine you were told to wear something that went against your belief or religion. How would you feel? Rob Manfred, a commissioner for the Major League Baseball, warned multiple players on the Giants team for writing Bible verses on Pride caps. Manfred wrote in a letter explaining how the league in general doesn’t want their players to mention any political issues or social issues. According to The Athletic it states, “(T)he league does not desire for its players to become messengers for political or social issues while in uniform playing baseball games,” Manfred wrote in a letter, “because many messages have the potential to offend some segment of our fanbase — even if that was not the intent of the player.”(Nesbitt, Blum, nytimes.com/athletic). This controversy all happened around June 2026, on the 12th. Where did the controversy happen you may ask? Well, this took place at the Oracle Park in San Francisco, California during the Giants game against Chicago Cubs. According to the article, “MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said the San Francisco players who wrote a Bible verse on rainbow-themed caps received no discipline and assured there was no religious discrimination involved.” it states, “The controversy grew out of the Giants’ June 12 Pride Night at Oracle Park, when four pitchers protested the team-issued rainbow-colored hats for the game.” (Mayer, wusf.org). This sentence from the article contributes to the rest of this article because it explains exactly how many players protested. Luckily the same article also explains how three of the players who wrote bible verses will not be punished or get disciplined, “now will they ever be,” because of the miscommunication between the league staff members and players. The same article discusses how the commissioner mainly blames the team communication because they did not inform the players that wearing the pride caps were optional. led to the writings of the Bible verses.
