On July 2, 2026, researchers at the University of Minnesota announced they had fully built SpudCell, a cell-like system that feeds, grows, divides, and competes “across generations.” It is the first artificial cell that is made entirely from nonliving chemicals to complete a full life cycle. The news has prompted questions among scientists about what defines life and where synthetic biology is heading.
SpudCell’s creators do not claim to have created actual life. Dr. John Glass of the J. Craig Venter Institute, who has not been involved with the project, noted that “alive” is not precisely defined, comparing it to Justice Stewart’s famous remark about pornography: “I know it when I see it.” Most experts agree SpudCell has not crossed that line.
The cell has key limits: it cannot build its own ribosomes and depends on lab-supplied enzymes and proteins, so it can only survive in a petri dish. Dr. Ronit Freeman of UNC Chapel Hill said the method is elegant but may be hard for other labs to replicate.
Potential applications include new medicines and materials, once scientists learn to engineer specific genes. However, biosecurity experts also warn of potential risks. Dr. Becky Mackelprang of the Engineering Biology Research Consortium compared the technology to a hammer; it can build or destroy. In its current form, SpudCell poses no threat because it cannot survive outside the lab. Still, Dr. Tom Inglesby of Johns Hopkins cautioned that future harmful synthetic cells could have serious consequences.
Dr. David Relman of Stanford called the work “creative, disruptive and provocative” for revealing what might soon be possible. While SpudCell is not alive, it is a catalyst for essential conversations about the benefits and dangers of biotechnology.
