A New Time Capsule to Last 250 Years
A time capsule will be buried in Philadelphia and will be opened in 250 years. It was will be buried to honor the United States’s 250th birthday.

The states all contributed various strange things to the time capsule, and although some of them are paper documents, some are a little odd. For example, according to America 250.org, Arizona and Michigan both contributed copper. Sticking to the topic of ores, Arkansas contributed a diamond! California, known for its tech companies, contributed a prediction of the future made by Claude, an AI model. Maine contributed a bone from a North Atlantic Right Whale. Nevada, famous for its casinos, so they contributed casino tokens. New Mexico contributed many wild things, including the recipe for the official state cookie! Lastly, Wisconsin contributed a feather from Old Abe, an eagle who served in the American Civil War.

The capsule was built to last a very, very long time. More than two times longer than our lives. And it was built to last in the damp underground. According to Dogo News, the capsule will be made out of stainless steel and will be closed with a watertight seal so that water does not get in. This will make sure the delicate contents inside the capsule remain undamaged.

According to Dogo News, this capsule will be buried near Independence Hall. A statue will be placed where it is buried so it can be easily found. The statue is of a snake cut into eight pieces, which was inspired by the drawing made by Benjamin Franklin. The National Park Service has even recorded the burial site.

America’s 250th anniversary capsule will give people in the future a look into the life of someone in 2026. It will also help engineers build stronger time capsules in the future by learning from any mistakes we made with this one. According to Dogo News, alongside the objects that the states contributed, the capsule will also contain a picture of the people who built the capsule and a letter that says, “Greetings from the living, breathing hearts and hands of 2026. We will have long since returned to dust, but our devotion, pride, and unwavering hope for what our world could become are alive right here inside this steel. We built this for you.”
