On June 24, 2026, northern Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes just 39 seconds apart. The first measured magnitude 7.2, and the second, which struck nearby, was even stronger at magnitude 7.5. Scientists call this rare event a “twin quake” or a “doublet”. The second quake released nearly three times the energy as the first, making it the main event. The tremors happened west of the capital, Caracas, in the Yaracuy Valley, and have caused widespread damage, though the full extent is still being assessed.
The cause lies in Venezuela’s location on a complex geological boundary. The Caribbean tectonic plate slowly moves eastward against the South American plate, building up pressure along several large faults. The first rupture likely triggered the second by sending strong seismic waves into a nearby locked section of the same fault system. Because both quakes were shallow—close to the Earth’s surface—the shaking lost little energy before reaching towns and cities. The valley’s loose, soft soils made things much worse by amplifying the shaking, triggering landslides, and causing the ground to temporarily turn into liquid; a process called liquefaction. The rupture also directly moved eastward toward Caracas, giving the capital a “direct hit.” Venezuela’s lack of a modern earthquake early-warning system and its ongoing economic struggles further increased the danger to people and buildings.
As for what comes next, the region is already experiencing many smaller aftershocks, mostly in the magnitude 3 to 5 range. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is a 24 percent chance of a magnitude 6 aftershock and a 3 percent chance of another magnitude 7 event within the next week. Seismologists explain that aftershocks are most frequent right after a big earthquake, and, then, they slowly decrease over days, weeks, or even years. This means the seismic unrest and the fear it brings are likely to continue for a long time, keeping the affected communities on edge while recovery efforts move forward.
