The world has been tensely watching the conflict between the US and Iran. On May 24, 2026, the US and Iran announced their plans for a peace talk to end the 3-month-old Iran War. There has already been a failed peace talk, but government officials hope this one will finally bring the end to the war and high gas prices.
This war in Iran has been a rocky one. There have been many back-and-forth strikes between US and its allies—Israel, Saudi Arabia, and others—and Iran and its allies—Iraq, Palestine, and Yemen. The US first began with its naval blockade of The Strait of Hormuz and the rest of Iran’s ports. However, this action, and many other US-Israeli attacks, caused Iran to militarily close the Strait and shut down travel for most non-Iranian vessels. This military blockade has caused the rise and shortages of petroleum and oil in many countries such Vietnam and many countries in Southern Asia. In a military war, the gas prices have started to make the civilians pay the price.
These oil and petroleum shortages around the world, plus Iran needing economic relief, has caused peace talks to start forming. The outcome of these talks could be one of the most important moments of 2026, not just for Iran and the US, but for every country feeling the effects of this war. In these talks, the US has clearly stated that they want a halt in Iran’s nuclear bomb program, and that they want Iran to give up or destroy their plentiful Uranium supply. In return, Iran states that they want the US to lift all economic sanctions and to remove all of their military bases from the Middle East.
Trump’s reluctance is because of his disdain of President Barack Obama giving Iran $1.7 billion in exchange for four detained Americans in what Trump and his supporters call “ The Pallet of Cash Scandal” in 2016. Another contributing factor was that there was President Obama’s 2015 Nuclear Deal with Iran, involving their halt of nuclear weapon making in return for economic sanctions. Trump withdrew the US from that deal in 2018 because of the deal’s “flaws”, and his want for maximum pressure on Iran to fully stop their nuclear program.
The new peace talks might not be easily agreed upon, as both countries want many important deals. There are also many problems that haven’t been resolved yet, like whether the US will actually pay Iran anything, and what will happen to the nuclear program in the future. If these dilemmas don’t get solved in time, the peace talks could fail again, just like last time. Around the world, many countries are relying on the talks to be successful, as their economies could suddenly recover if Iran opens its ports again for the purchases of oil. In the end of the day, both sides of the war are fighting a war which will give them no reward if they continue, and that should hopefully persuade them in finalizing a deal quick.
