Newborn Eaglets in Big Bear Valley, California
In April 2026, a couple of bald eagles named Jackie and Shadow hatched two eggs in Big Bear Valley, California.
Jackie, a bald eagle born in 2012, is now a mother of two chicks with her lover Shadow. Jackie previously had a chick named Stormy and a mate named Mr. B. Then, the intrusion of a bald eagle named Shadow gave room for a new family of bald eagles.
The Friends of Big Bear Valley even hosted a contest to name the eaglets. If you want to join the naming contest, you would have to donate money to help protect wildlife. After narrowing down all the submissions, third graders in local schools of Big Bear Valley will then vote to decide the final names for the two eaglets. Now there is an update on the names. The winning names were announced in May 2026. The two bald eaglets of Jackie and Shadow have now been officially named Sandy and Luna.
One of the names was in honor of the legacy of Big Bear Valley. The name Sandy was chosen to honor Sandy Steers, the former head of Friends of Big Bear Valley and a conservationist who passed away recently.
The Friends of Big Bear Valley even put 24/7 live cameras to give wildlife animal lovers a closer look at the bald eagles. The donations from the naming contest were used to support the cameras.
