Every house has one object with the job of moving an object to another place each night. If there weren’t people searching and panicking because they thought they lost something, everything things would be very bored. In one big house the object was a spoon called Spoon. Because the house was so big Spoon had to be very good to not be caught and it was good at it. Spoon loved its job very much.
One day, there was a shiny new fork named called Fork in the cabinet. Everything was admiring it. There were almost never new objects, especially shiny ones.
That night, Spoon couldn’t focus because it was thinking about Fork and how nice it would be to be shiny like that. Because it wasn’t focusing, Spoon didn’t hear a human’s footsteps until it was almost too late. Spoon hoped nobody noticed, but they did. All of the other things blamed Spoon and said if it was caught, they would all be in danger.
“Spoon, that was so irresponsible. Fork will be the new object to do the job,” said a lamp. Since it was the oldest object, it was in charge.
Spoon felt very angry that the thing that almost got it caught was going to replace it. Then Spoon told itself it must be its fault it wasn’t focused and good enough at its job. Spoon thought that maybe it would be better if it was shiny like Fork.
When Spoon woke up in the morning, everything was talking and panicking.
“Did you hear? Fork got caught!” said the chairs.
“The human is mad! Fork is going to get thrown out!” said the windows.
Spoon felt very shocked, but soon it decided to go find and rescue Fork. Nobody else was sneaky enough. Spoon found Fork on a table upstairs and took it to hide in the cabinet. The things heard the human shouting when Fork was missing but then calmed down.
That night, Spoon took Fork outside to show all things that Fork was rescued! Everything celebrated.
“Fork is too shiny. Spoon, you can do the job again!” said the lamp. Everything cheered.
Spoon spent the rest of its life doing its job, and even when it saw a shinier spoon or fork it knew it didn’t need to be shiny to be good at its job.
