Angry Doors
After lots of waiting, my teacher announced would stay after school on some days. During these days, we did many activities like art, reading, and outside interests that we didn’t get to do normally.
One day, my teacher”Group 6! Follow me!” my teacher finally called. Everyone was scrambling all over the place. Finally, after a couple minutes of chaos, everone finally formed into a crooked line. The teacher walked backward, leading us into the classroom. Everyone got seated, and I was the last to enter.
The teacher asked, “Kaelyn, can you help us close the door? It’s a bit chilly in the classroom.”
I hesitantly nodded and tried to lift the stopper with my foot. Suddenly, the wind blew hard, and the heavy door started closing like an angry bull. I quickly tried to pull my tiny hands away as it closed. However, my pinky wasn’t fast enough. The door slammed shut, and I started to cry. My teacher came and looked at my pinky. For some reason, she was calm. Everyone stared at me. I heard crickets in the silence.
Walking to the office with my red, trembling pinkie and my teacher beside me was kind of awkward, as I had just finished crying, and my pinkie didn’t hurt as much.
“What happened today?” the nurse asked. The nurse examined my finger and gave me an ice pack, telling me I could return to class. I walked down the hall and rejoined my class as I kept my pinky close.
This story has helped me understand that unexpected obstacles may appear sometimes. However, challenges can not stop you. Instead, you have to keep going as life also keeps going. When my friends checked in on me after, I realized how it made me feel much better and comforted. Now, I understand why seeing others’ perspectives and supporting them is so important.
This year, I want to develop more empathy. This will help me support them and do what I can to make them feel better. Understanding others’ perspectives is one of the biggest goals I want to work on, so I can better help others.
