At Keystone Middle School, all schoolbooks were alive. My math book would purr like a happy kitten when I got answers right, but pound like a mad drum if I forgot homework.
The rule was clear: Be nice to them, or they’ll act up. Last week, Jason’s science book got soaked with seawater because he drew silly pictures on its pages. Now, my English book was causing trouble. It kept flipping to sad love poems during spelling tests.
By exam week, my book whispered short poems to help me write. Even Jason’s science book helped him pass a test, but made him swear to stop marking its pages.
