Sports for Entertainment?
The primary goal of sports is to entertain because athletes want to receive good attention from the audience, and the audience wants a good game to see or talk about.
Sports are meant to be entertaining, which was the reason why they were created. According to the Romans, as long as men have entertainment and food, they won’t question the things around them. Such a quote states that people, as long as they have entertainment and food, they will be happy. This shows that even in ancient civilizations, people have been using sports as entertainment because it is what it appears to be made for. An example of such a sport was the gladiator games they had. It was a sport meant to entertain the public.
Another example of why sports are meant to entertain is that the people who play sports for fun usually want to see their time spent on something bear fruit. The crowd‘s cheering achieves that. According to the Los Angeles Times, the cheering or booing of the crowd can directly impact how the players do. Reasons for that are due to the psychological aspect of this. Since the crowd is cheering for something the athletes put so much work into, they would naturally meet their expectations subconsciously. Therefore, they will work harder and surpass their previous limits to not let them down.
A booing crowd can discourage the athlete and make them demoralized, therefore not performing as their usual selves. This, combined with the aspect of possible disappointment even with the amount of effort they put in, may impact them in bad ways.
Since the crowd can change the results of the games just by being there, the games or sports are meant to be entertainment for the people.
