Possible Racism Discrimination at Premier League Game.
On August 15th, 2025, a football player, Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth, reported racist abuse during the Premier League Opening Game. He stated that he was racially abused by a crowd member in Anfield.
After the report, Referee Anthony Taylor stopped the game in the 29th minute, before talking to both managers. Both of the team’s captains, Virgil van Dijk and Adam Smith, were told what had happened before the match resumed four minutes later.
Bournemouth Captain, Adams Smith, had stated that he was “shocked” by the incident and said that “something needs to be done”. While the Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk, considered the action “a disgrace.”
In a statement, the Football Association added that “incidents of this nature have no place in our game”. Liverpool also issued a statement, saying they “condemn racism and discrimination in all forms” and the club “will support fully.”
In another statement, the Football Association stated, “We are very concerned about the allegation of discrimination from an area of the crowd.” After the game, Antoine Semenyo himself asked on social media: “When will it stop?”
The Merseyside Police did end up having a 47-year-old man thrown out of Anfield following reports of racist abuse directed towards Semenyo, though this claim is still being investigated.
