NEW SPECIES OF ANCIENT SHARK DISCOVERED IN KENTUCKY

In July of 2025, scientists discovered a new species of ancient shark in Kentucky, US. The fossil was found in Mammoth Cave National Park, a site for other discoveries.

In prehistoric times, Mammoth Cave was submerged in water. The caves are the longest known cave system in the world. Many fossils, including other ancient sharks like the sabertooth, have been found in the caves.

The Macadens olsoni will support researchers in further understanding early oceans. “This finding not only enhances our knowledge of ancient marine ecosystems but also emphasizes the critical role of paleontological research in our national parks,” said Superintendent Trimble.

This new species, the Macadens olsoni, is no longer than a foot or approximately 30 centimeters. Researchers believe that its diet consists of worms and mollusks due to the row of curved teeth found in fossils. The name of this newly discovered ancient creature is taken from the name of Mammoth Cave, and retired scientist Rickard Olson.

Another shark, Helodus coxanus, was also studied by scientists. Officials say that the two sharks have many similarities, like their uniquely shaped curved teeth.

“Every discovery connects the past with the present and offers invaluable educational opportunities for students and the public,” Trimble adds. From this, researchers will be able to learn more about underwater creatures from the past.
