How are humans superior to other animals
Many people often say that out of all the animals, we humans are the most special and remarkable, but why is that? If it is our language development, all animals have their own ways of communicating. If it’s our contributions to society, all animals have their own developed communities, so in what way are humans superior? Humans are unique due to their detailed and sophisticatedly crafted languages. We allow ourselves to observe and think, which over time starts to build not only convenient inventions but also a society where we can continue to learn from each other.
Noticing how we are the most populous mammal, there has to be a reason behind it. As a baby, we are immersed in the different human languages and picking up on the different sounds around us. Unlike similar animals such as apes, we are spoken to far more than baby apes are talked to by their parents. As Carl Zimmer explains in his article on The New York Times, “the rate that children heard infant-directed communication was 69 times as high as what Dr. Fryns observed among chimpanzees, and 399 times as high as what Dr. Wegdell observed among bonobos.” Without the frequent communication starting from a young age, babies cannot learn the language as quickly and as needed for survival. Other mammals are still fighting for survival throughout in the food chain, but humans have a throughly created a society that is not at risk of harm from any life-destroying animals. Humans grasp knowledge quickly and learn to teach it to their babies as infants.
Along with baby talk to infants, humans also possess a more logical and complex thought process, which enables us to create various useful inventions. as stated by Cornell University, “Gutenberg created the first paper printing press and ushered in the modern age of media and knowledge.” The human species has founded and created numerous tools to help guide us to the way we live today. Humans’ ways of thinking and learning are shown to be brighter than primates. Also, we are still developing new resources for future generations.
Even though it is true that other animals can communicate and build communities of their own, they still have not developed ones as sophisticated as the human species. Our ways of living, communicating, and thinking are truly exceptional compared to other animals.
