Our Days on Earth are Getting Shorter! The Plant is Spinning Faster!

As time goes on, the days are getting shorter as Earth spins faster. This week has been the shortest week so far this year. According to multiple sources, last Wednesday (7/9/2025), was 1.34 milliseconds shorter than 24 hours. This is due to certain movements in the center of the Earth’s sphere, changes in the atmosphere, and the position of the moon.

Some days are actually longer than others. Data shows that days on Earth have never been consistent. One reason why some days are longer than others has to do with tides. Tides send heat out to the ocean but only a small amount. This, with some other factors, slows down the Earth’s rotation. This process of sending out heat using tides takes billions of years to affect the rotation of the Earth. Although something to consider is that the main effect on the rotation of Earth is by the Moon’s gravitational pull. There are many other contributors, too.

Around one to two billion years ago, researchers found that beginning from when the Earth was fairly new, it spun more slowly, making the days longer. This is on its axis.
