Norrie in Wimbledon 2025
British number three Cameron Norrie has made it through to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon 2025. Norrie is currently ranked 61st in the world, following a tough season with early exits at major tournaments and a drop from his career-high ranking of number eight. He has been battling injuries and fierce competition, and has finally achieved his goal of reaching the quarter-finals in Wimbledon.
Norrie picked up a tennis racket at the age of six and hasn’t put it down since. With nearly 23 years on the court, Norrie had his triumphant win at the 2021 Indian Wells Masters. It was his biggest accomplishment to date. In 2022, he reached a career-high ATP ranking of world number eight and became the fourth British male to break into the ATP Top 10.
On Sunday, July 6th, Norrie powered through an intense five-set marathon (6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7,6-3) lasting 4 hours 27 minutes, and he advanced after defeating Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, who had 103 winners and 46 aces. Norrie admitted that he didn’t expect the victory and was surprised by the outcome, because there were just too many expectations. “Honestly, I don’t know,” Norrie said when asked how he’d gotten through the round. He also praised his opponent, saying that “Nico did an unbelievable job”.
Next, will Norrie love meeting his next tough opponent, Carlos Alcaraz, in the Wimbledon quarter finals? Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz extended his career-best winning streak to 21 matches after defeating Russian player Andrey Rublev in their fourth-round match.
There was also disappointment for other British tennis players, who suffered defeats in their matches. Just hours after Norrie’s win, 23-year-old Sonay Kartel, the final home player in the women’s singles, was knocked out of the competition by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Centre Court, with a match score of 7-6 (7-3) 6-4. “I think I have definitely had a bit more attention on me this week. It’s kind of blown up a bit,” said Kartel. Emma Raducanu also faced defeat in a tiring match against world number one Aryana Sabalenka. Raducanu was heartbroken as her Wimbledon journey came to an end. She was defeated 7-6 6-4 by Aryana Sablenka.
