More teams join the Women's Super League

At the start of the 2026-2027 season, two teams will join the Women’s Super League. So, the WSL will make new rules that suit 14 teams.
So, here’s how it will work. At the end of the 2025-2026 season, the expansion will begin. The top two teams will automatically be recruited in the WSL. Then, the team who gets third would go against the team at the bottom of WSL. The winner would get the final spot in the expansion. That way, there will be 14 teams in the WSL in the 2026-2027 season.
That is not all. After the expansion and 2025-2026 season is done, the team that gets last place would move to a lower rank. The team that got first would be promoted. There is also another change. The team that gets second last place would go against the team that gets second. The winner would move on to the 2027-2028 season.
Here is what Nikki Doucet, the boss of WSL Football, has to say about the changes over the past few months, “WSL Football has led a thorough and robust, consultative process backed by research and analysis which explored multiple options that could drive the game forward and help it reach its potential.”
These proposed changes have been approved already by the Football Association (FA). The FA approved the changes on Monday, with a vote by clubs.
