Portugal makes history with second Nations League title
June 8th, 2025 was a historic night for Portugal as they became the only country to win the Nations League two times. The close game between Portugal and Spain went to a penalty shootout where Ruben Neves scored a decisive shot, ultimately leading Portugal to victory.
The final match of the Nations League, an international European football competition, featured a tight game between two European teams, Portugal and Spain. With stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal on either team, the match was close, bringing the score to 2-2 after extra time. During the penalty shootout, Portugal stayed confident and converted all five of their shots while Spain missed one. This victory secured Portugal’s second Nations League title, and also added another emotional milestone to Ronaldo’s career.
However, it wasn’t an easy road to victory as both teams traded blows in a match that kept fans on edge. Spain scored first with a goal from Martin Zubimendi 21 minutes in, but Portugal responded quickly, evening the score in just 5 minutes with a rocket by Nuno Mendes. Just before half-time, Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead again, making the score 2-1. However, in the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a volley to tie the score at 2-2. Despite several chances during extra-time, the score remained 2-2 into a dramatic penalty shootout, where Portugal ultimately defeated Spain.
As the Portugal team lifted the trophy, the moment was especially emotional for Ronaldo, who was seen in tears. He even commented, “winning for Portugal is always special.” Portugal didn’t just win a trophy, they made Nations League history.
