Running outside, I looked around my backyard. Every inch of grass, the neighbor’s roofs, all of the trees… They were all covered with the same white, fluffy, soft masterpiece – snow.
“I love snow…” I sighed happily as I ran through my hands — which were covered with thick, pink mittens — through the snow. Lightly, snow started falling. I couldn’t help waiting to spend the entire day playing with snow. I turned to look at my house as I heard a window opening. It was my mom!
“You sure like the snow, huh!” My mom called out as she stuck her head out of the window and grinned. “Come back for breakfast!”
“I will!” I called back. I looked up at the sky, trying to catch the tiny snowflakes with my mittens. But, every time I caught them, they melt before I could get a good look at them. I started running around the back yard, trying to search for a snowflake I could actually catch.
Then, I saw it. A tiny, clear, pretty snowflake landing right in the middle of the mitten. I was expecting it to melt away when a voice called out, “Hey! You!” I jolted as I fell onto the ground.
“Wh…What?” I stammered. “Who’s there?”
“It’s me! The snowflake!” The snowflake on my mitten grew larger and larger until it grew to the size of my palm. “Let’s chat.” The snowflake grinned.
“Uh… Ok…” I said, not knowing what was about to happen.
“So, do you want to be friends?” The snowflake asked.
“Sure!? But why…” I asked, confused.
“I don’t have any snowflake friends,” The snowflake sighed. “So, I want to make a human friend, aka, you!” The snowflake pipped cheerfully. “I’m Silky.”
I grinned. A snowflake friend was the best thing ever! “I LOVE SNOW! I’m Grace.” I cried happily.
We shook hands, and we smiled at each other. I could feel Silky’s cold palm holding on to my mitten-covered hands.
After that, we did everything together. Silky and I were best friends. I hid Silky and took her to the mall so we could shop together. We also read books together, drank hot cocoa together, and went skiing down the hill together. Silky surprisingly never, ever, melted — even during summer. Every time I wake up to see Silky snoozing right next to me, I sigh happily. “I love snow…” as I jump out of my bed to spend another awesome day with my best friend, Silky.
