Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Luna. She loved the winter, especially catching snowflakes and seeing them melt in her mittens. Her family lived in a kingdom where the king was strict and captured people that didn’t please him.
One Christmas Eve, Luna finished her meal early to play in the snow. When she stepped outside, she noticed a change, but didn’t know what it was. She decided to start playing and worry about it later.
Suddenly, Luna saw a snowflake the size of a ping-pong ball. “Huh,” she thought. “That’s a very large snowflake!” The snowflake didn’t melt but started to glow! Luna shook her head. “I’m probably just seeing things,” she thought.
Then, a squeaky little voice came out of the snowflake. It said, “Help! Help! Help! Save me! Please!” As Luna looked closer, it was actually a tiny mouse trapped in a snowball! He told her how he used to be a human and had tried to give the king a present, but didn’t please him enough. The king had shouted, “You don’t deserve to be a human!” and turned him into a mouse. Knowing this, Luna agreed to help.
The next day, Luna hurried around the house. Their house was a small cottage with two rooms and two beds. There was a table, three chairs, and a bathroom. It was perfect for just her and her parents, who were usually very busy. They both worked at the supermarket and Luna was often left home alone.
Luna gathered her materials: some crayons and paper, a golden crown, and a camera. After that, she set off, taking pictures of things in her town that needed improvement, while going to the king.
The castle was made of gold, silver, and marble. The king’s guards stood outside, making sure that nobody was going to threaten their leader.
Luna said, “I am here to give the king a present, which I’m hoping will please him.”
The guards gruffly let Luna in.
When she arrived at the king’s throne, Luna said, “I have brought you a golden crown, but you must do the following in order to get it. First, build public restrooms, water fountains, etc. And second, treat people nicely.”
Because of the king’s greed, he agreed to help. He sent servants to carry out her wishes, but he also needed to free those he had captured.
When the king asked for the crown, Luna said, holding up the mouse, “You must also reverse your curse on this mouse.”
The king brought out a wizard, who turned the mouse back into a human. After the king did so, and was about to send Luna off, she asked him what punishment he would have if he captured somebody in the future.
Sighing, the king made a committee of people called police, who would deal with serious problems. He then gave Luna a paper, with his signature on it, saying he wouldn’t capture anybody from now on. Some people believe that this is how the police were invented.
