After making a mistake on the uneven bars, Simone Biles of team USA did very well on freestyle gymnastics. Though the event was challenging, Biles did exceptionally well, leading her to win the gold in gymnastics. After seeing her performance in the last competition, Biles and her teammate, Susana Lee were waiting for the gold and to bring the US flag onto the podium. Let’s see her performance in each part of the competition.
Vault
The first competition was the Vault and Biles did the most difficult one, called the Yurchenko double pike and no other woman has done it before. The difficulty value of the double pike was 0.8 higher than Brazilian Gymnast Andrade, Cheng. Biles did very well and got 15 points while Andrade got a little bit less than 14 points.
Bars
The second competition was the uneven bars. Unlike the Vault, Biles didn’t do very well on the uneven bars and positioned herself incorrectly on a transition, causing her to do an extra move to get the rhythm going again. This error left her in third place. Meanwhile, Susana Lee did well in uneven bars and left her in second place after the competition.
Beams
The third competition was the balance beams. Most of the competitors wobbled a lot on the balance beams, but Biles kept her balance very well, ending up getting her the lead. Andrade was close behind getting second place. These two competitors’ points were getting very close and it was the last move which Biles did that got her the lead.
Floor
The final competition was floor, which Biles did the best she could ever do, getting more than 15 points. She did a triple-twisting double back flip and secured the gold medal for team USA. Another reason that Biles won is because Andrade stepped out of bounds, but she still managed to get the silver. Biles was the first woman to win two all-around Olympic titles since 1984.
The next Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028.
