Last Friday, Sydney McLaughlin broke the world record for the 400-meter hurdles by 0.73 seconds at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. The craziest part is that the former world record was also set by McLaughlin, just 27 days before the current record.

McLaughlin won her first world championship and set a world record, more than a second ahead of the silver medalist, Femke Bol of the Netherlands, according to The New York Times. The bronze medal was awarded to Dalilah Muhammad, the world record holder, before McLaughlin crushed the competition.

This probably won’t be McLaughlin’s last astonishing performance. “I think we’re all figuring out that, yes, there are 10 barriers, but we can run them a lot faster than people think. I still think that wasn’t even a super clean race.”
