Minority patients across the United States experience discrimination in routine doctors’ visits.

Christina was 50 pounds overweight, and she felt left out by the doctors. Some of her doctors barely looked at her and said that she is overweight. For example, one day she fell off a bike and a few days later she said her elbow still hurt. Her doctor merely said that being overweight is putting pressure on her joints. But when she went to an urgent care a week later, she found out she had chipped her elbow bone.

A New York Times article that was posted in July of 2022 had 2,800 responses saying that they felt left out by their doctors too. Gaslighting, saying somebody has this symptom because of their size and weight, is most commonly experienced by women.

There have been questions about the safety of LGBTQ people too because some of their problems have been said to be caused by their own ways. Black people have a lot more problems than white people, which led to people just saying it is because they’re black. Gaslighting can mainly be experienced if your provider is ignoring what you say. Dr. Nicole Mitchell said that it is important for her to talk to every patient and find out their problems.

Doctor Mitchell said it is important that you keep a record of your problem so you know if it is a real problem. Keep all results of medical history.

To avoid gaslighting, always try to ask the doctor questions, keep her talking, always bring a support person in case you run out of words or are too tired to speak. Look at the current problem, don’t talk about random things in life, and lastly always know what you are doing next.

If you are being gaslighted you can always get another doctor which will hopefully be a good one, say the same things in different words, look for people who will help you, and look for a higher class like your doctor’s boss.
