Three months after Liz Cambage said she was committed to playing for the Los Angeles Sparks, the team announced they and Cambage agreed to a “contract divorce.”

Fred Williams, the Sparks’ interim coach, said the split may be the result of things that happened off the court. In the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics, Cambage allegedly used racial slurs against her opponents, the Nigerian women’s national team. The Australian national team called off the basketball game before the second quarter because of this. She made an apology the day after, but it was not very well received.

Whether it was about basketball or not, Williams still respects her decision to leave.

“Having conversations with her afterward, it just felt it was good for her personally to make that move. All we can do as an organization is support that and her decisions and just move on,” he said.

Along with basketball, Cambage has other endeavors. She’s signed to IMG, a talent agency, and has modeled for Adidas. She also is a brand ambassador for Savage X Fenty, Rihanna’s lingerie line, and a DJ with Wasserman Music.

In the past, Cambage has shared about her journey with mental health and depression. In May, she said she felt she was “living someone else’s dream,” but realized it had been her dream all along to play in LA.

“I have to respect what she wants. You have to listen because it could be something else, could be something that’s not related to basketball,” Williams said.
