The 9th birthday of Prince George was celebrated on Friday, and the royals have released a picture of him on a beach in Norfolk. It has become a tradition that a photo is taken on the birthdays of the three young royals, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Prince George’s birthday picture was widely celebrated in many newsletters, however, it is not the only thing that dominated Friday’s headlines.
A more controversial story about Prince George’s late grandmother, Princess Diana, also was one of the major parts of Friday’s newsletter. The BBC said Thursday that it would pay “substantial damages” to the former nanny of William and Prince Harry, Alexandra Pettifer, over the false claims that she had an affair with Prince Charles by BBC journalist Martin Bashir’s attempt to get an exclusive interview.
The interview that aired in 1995 stunned the world for its insight into Princess Diana’s miserable marriage with Prince Charles. In the interview, Princess Diana told everyone that “there were three of us in this marriage,” with the third person being Camilla Parker-Bowles, who is now married to Prince Charles. An independent investigation was later held and found that Bashir faked all of the documents and used deceitful behavior in arranging the crucial meeting that was held before Bashir’s interview with the princess.
The interview was “a result of the deceitful tactics used by the BBC,” BBC Director General Tim Davie said in a statement on Thursday. “I would like to take this opportunity to apologize publicly to her [Alexandra Pettifer], to The Prince of Wales, and to the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex, for the way in which Princess Diana was deceived and the subsequent impact on all their lives.” The interview was criticized by William and Harry, and Bashir has since left the BBC.
