A long time ago, a giant shark roamed the seas, that is now extinct. It looked similar to the great white shark, the only difference was that it was much bigger. The scientists suspected the extinction was caused by another kind of giant shark, the great white shark.
The Shark, called the megalodon, reached 50 feet long. Its jaws were so big that they could swallow two adults at once.
Fossils have shown that the megalodon was the king of the seas for about 13 million year. It went extinct about 2.6 million years ago.
There are a few theories of how the megalodon got extinct. Although the great white shark was smaller than the megalodon, it could have competed with them. The changes in the seas at that time could also be enough to make a difference. The megalodon was dealing with dwindling populations of the small whales they ate and shrinking into smaller, more fragmented populations. Under these conditions, the great white shark might have become the greater singular.
