Recently, a rare pink diamond has been discovered in the Lulo alluvial diamond mine in Angola by the Lucapa Diamond Company.
The 170-carat diamond was named Lulo Rose, weighing 34 grams. It was thought to be the biggest diamond discovered in the last 300 years. Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s minister of mineral resources, stated, “This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage.”
Pink diamonds are actually rarer than other colors of diamonds, so they’re worth more money. This diamond has not been cut yet, so we don’t know exactly what its price is yet.
Diamonds are colored from the minerals in the ground when they form, so the reason pink diamonds are rare is probably because there are less of that type of mineral in the ground when diamonds form. Even though we do not know what mineral pink diamonds form from yet, we do know that blue diamonds form from boron, and yellow diamonds from nitrogen.
Diamonds are made of carbon found deep inside earth. “There, carbon deposits are exposed to an extreme amount of pressure and heat, which slowly turns them into diamonds. This process can take days, months, and even millions of years!” stated an article in CBC Newsround.
Scientists have also found ways to make diamonds using carbon on the surface. One scientist actually found a way to create diamonds using the carbon in the air, calling them “sky diamonds.” Many people think that this is better for the earth, as no one is digging deep holes and mines to get diamonds.
