Everyone can agree that diamonds are extremely rare and expensive. For a 0.5-carat diamond, the cost could be as low as $1,500. A 2-carat diamond can cost as much as $21,000. The cost varies on color, shape, and other factors.

A 170 carat 34-gram pink diamond has been excavated. It is thought to be the largest discovered Lulo Rose (the pink diamond).

“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage,” said Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s minister of mineral resources.

According to Joanna Hardy, pink diamonds are the rarest of all diamonds. Similar diamonds have been bought for millions of dollars. Known as the pink star, one was sold for $71.2 million USD in 2017.

How are diamonds formed? Diamonds are just a compressed piece of carbon but very rare. They are formed in the upper mantle about 100 miles below the surface of the crust.

In the mantle, there is extreme pressure and heat. Some carbon slowly turns into diamonds. This process can take days to more than millions of years!

How can diamonds from 100 miles below where we are right now be mined? Isn’t the deepest man-made pit not even 13 miles deep? Diamonds are carried from the mantle to the surface by volcanic eruptions. That’s why it is important to search near volcanoes!

Did you know that some diamonds are older than the oldest fossil? Even though they are shiny, they can be billions of years old. Earth is only 4.5 billion years old!

What gives diamonds (or any mineral) their color? It seems weird to have light blue and pink diamonds. Something doesn’t seem right. Aren’t diamonds pure carbon?

No. Diamonds were never pure carbon. They are mostly carbon and partly other colors. Those colors depend on elements that make a small part of the diamond.

Blue diamonds get their color from boron, the fifth element on the periodic table. Yellow diamonds get their color from nitrogen, the seventh element on the periodic table. Pink colored diamonds have an unknown element that gives them their color.

Diamonds are expensive, and we know that they are also luxurious. Pink diamonds, or Lulo Rose, are currently known as one of the rarest minerals. Will there be a bigger pink diamond twice the size? Who will find it? Who will buy it? It might take years to find out!
