Asian dancer, Chun Wai Chan, “is the first principal dancer from China in New York City Ballet’s 74-year history”.

Chun has a passion for dance unlike anyone else. The morning his historic placement was announced “some dancers were still easing into their routines. But Chun brimmed with energy, vowing to use class time to exercise each muscle.” He is very focused and disciplined.

Chun was born in China, he lived in Huizhou. He had gained fans because he competed in a dance called “Dance Smash.” This is a famous Chinese show that thousands of people watch.

In his dance class, very few people were Asian. At his dance company, 9 of the 96 dancers are of Asian descent. “Chan has embraced the history of his City Ballet appointment, speaking out about the struggles of Asian dancers to win recognition and the stereotypes about Asians that persist in classics like ‘The Nutcracker.’” Chun was very proud of himself for earning the promotion because he has worked very hard for all his life to excel in this field.

Chun first learned to dance when he was six years old. There weren’t many boys in his dance class, but Chun didn’t let that discourage him. “His parents were skeptical of his passion, and they encouraged him to pursue a career as a lawyer, doctor or accountant instead.” When he was 12, he wrote a letter to his family explaining his ambitions to “perform on the world’s biggest stages.”
