Barcelona has reported their 2nd death by monkeypox. The first outbreaks started in Europe and spread beyond Africa. The health ministry based in Madrid said both deaths from monkeypox were young men.
The news says that on the same day that the second Spaniard was reported dead, another monkeypox-related death was recorded in Brazil.
In the U.S. and Europe, most of the people who have monkeypox infections are men who have sex with men, even though health officials are stressed that anyone can catch the virus. The deaths outside Africa come one week after the World Health Organization declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency.
“The notification of deaths due to monkeypox does not change our assessment of the outbreak in Europe. We know that although the disease is self-limiting in most cases, monkeypox can cause severe complications,” said Catherine Smallwood, Senior Emergency Officer at WHO Europe. “With the continued spread of monkeypox in Europe, we will expect to see more deaths. Our goal needs to be on interrupting transmission quickly in Europe and stopping this outbreak,” she said.
On July 29, Spain reported that 4,298 people were infected with the disease more than any other country. Of that 4,298 people, 3500 people were men having sex with other men and 64 were women. The ministry said 120 have needed hospital attention. About 8% of people infected with the disease in Europe needed to be in a hospital.
Monkeypox spreads from skin-to-skin contact, but also by contact with the bed sheet of the person with the infected disease. Symptoms include fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and hives. It is extremely painful, and men need to be very careful because men have been infected with monkeypox a lot.
