“Nooooo!” Coco complained. Whining and whining and whining seemed to be getting him nowhere. His owners just wouldn’t take the Cone Of Shame off!
“I know Coco,” Daddy said with sympathy in his voice. “But it’s for your own good.” For my own good?? Coco thought with disbelief. “You got neutered, so you need a cone. You’ve got stitches at the spot where the vets did the surgery, and the cone is there so you don’t bite it.” Hmph. Coco thought, turning away and walking to his food in the kitchen.
He stared at his bowl. Tiny pieces of his brown, crunchy food that was boring. Coco bent his head down to chomp on his food, like he always did. When his nose reached a small paw length away from his food, he halted to a stop. What happened? Why did he stop? He puzzled over this for a minute or two, before realizing that the cone was in his way. Coco huffed. He tilted his head this way and that way, until his snout finally reached his food. He snarfed up a few pieces, bringing his jaw down on it with delight, imagining the great, mouth-watering taste.
Crunch!
Coco paused, the realization sinking in like water from the Shoer. Shower, Coco reminded himself. It’s called a Shower. His crunchy, yummy-looking food seemed to have almost no flavor at all! Coco spit some of it out, then licked it back into his mouth regardless, after all, he was starving. After a few more bites, he trotted towards the stairs. As he put one paw on the first step, Daddy picked him up.
“I’m sorry Coco, but you’re not allowed to go up and down stairs.” Daddy informed Coco. If Coco’s jaw could drop open and fall into Daddy’s arms, it would’ve. Not allowed to go up and down stairs?! Coco thought in shock. Why would you do this to me?! He whined and whined. This was so unfair! First, Coco was in so much pain, and eating food was hard, but now he can’t go up or down the stairs?!
“Oh, and you also can’t jump up or down beds,” Daddy said, adding one more thing to Coco’s Angry-Because-Of-These list. Daddy carried Coco up the stairs, up, up, up, into Amber’s room. She was using a similar device as what Daddy had. The one that clicked on, and on, and on. She was playing some sort of game on it, something she called Miner’s Crack.
“Hey, Amber,” Daddy called her over. “Stop playing Minecraft for a second?” Amber shifted her head, pressing a button while she did that. Her eyes fell on Coco, and she instantly gasped.
“Coco!” she gushed, running over to hug and kiss him. Coco’s tail wagged happily, back and forth, back and forth.
“Hey, careful,” Daddy snapped. Amber rolled her eyes while Daddy stared down at Coco.
“My little ba-a-by, my little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you are,” Amber sang while cuddling Coco like a baby. “My little ba-a-by, my little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you are. Oh my little ba-a-by, my cute little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you areee. My little ba-a-by, oh my cute little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you are.” Amber kept singing, but Coco was fast asleep.

Coco yawned. Where was he? His eyes gazed at his surroundings, before realizing where he was. Oh, I’m such a poop-brain! I’m in the Guest Room, again! If dogs could facepalm like humans, Coco would be facepalming right now. Sigh. Coco laid his head down on his tiny little puppy bed. Before he knew it, he was fast asleep again.
“Coco?” a voice asked. Coco felt something poke his back. “Coco?” the voice asked again. Coco opened his eyes to find Amber’s face a human foot’s length away from the tip of his snout. Amber let a shy smile spread across her face like water, pouring all over him in the Shower. Yes? Coco’s expression asked.
“Hi Coco,” Amber pet Coco on the back, stroking her fingers across his summer-cut fur. “I didn’t mean to wake you, I just thought you were awake already.” She whispered, her eyes full with sincere apologies. “It’s just, you’ve been sleeping for three hours, and I have to take you on a walk. A short walk.” she added. Why not. Coco thought. I could really go for a walk now. My paws are all tingling and numb-ish. This is what Amber described once. She called it My Legs Fell Asleep.
Coco gingerly followed Amber, still wondering about My Legs Fell Asleep. Such an odd name. He was lost in his train of thoughts when Amber picked him up, cuddling him like he was an itty-bitty baby. All the way down the stairs, and into Coco’s Getting-Ready-To-Go-On-A-Walk room, Amber sang her song about Coco.
While she attached the leash to his collar, she sang. As she opened the door with Coco in her hands, she sang. And down the front steps and along the path, she sang. At the end of the path, there were more steps. Amber sang while walking down those too. She sang as she put Coco down, she sang as she walked alongside Coco. And she sang even when their walk was over. Repeating the same song, over and over again.
“My little ba-a-by, my little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you are. “My little ba-a-by, my little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you are. Oh my little ba-a-by, my cute little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you areee. My little ba-a-by, oh my cute little ba-a-by, how cute you are, oh yes you are.”
At last, Coco fell asleep once more, in the comforting warmth of Amber’s arms.
