The towns of eastern Kentucky have been devastated by a flood, putting residents through a heart-wrenching journey.
Kentucky received a surplus of rain last Tuesday causing major flooding, and the death toll has been steadily increasing, with 37 confirmed fatalities and hundreds still missing. This comes after Kentucky has been hit with a recent string of other natural disasters, including a tornado that ripped through the state and caused 80 deaths.
The impact was catastrophic, as along with the lives lost, thousands of homes and businesses were flooded, with at least 300 people displaced into shelters. The destroyed infrastructure will cost millions to repair.
“We are currently experiencing one of the worst, most devastating flooding events in Kentucky’s history,” stated Governor Beshear as he issued a State of Emergency Thursday.
Although things seem to be all going wrong, rescue operations have saved 1,400 people from the deadly flood. The national guard has also been approved for the national guard to help on Friday.
