On Friday, July 15th 2022, England’s female football team: The Lionesses, finished top of their group after beating Northern Ireland 5 to 0. The Lionesses had already reserved their place in the quarter finals after racking up an impressive eight goals against Norway in their previous match.

The Lionesses’ manager, Sarina Wiegman, as unable to make her team’s game after testing positive for the Coronavirus on Friday, therefore the assistant coach, Arjan Veurink, was left alone to lead them during their game against Northern Ireland. However, the absence of their manager from their final group match didn’t hinder the Lionesses’ performance.

Northern Ireland managed to keep England at bay in the 16th minute with a block on the line to keep out their effort before they attempted to dive low to palm the ball behind.

Unluckily for Northern Ireland, they missed an early chance and afterwards were beaten by an English player in the 25th minute, who dragged the ball just wide of the target after beating the goalkeeper.

Soon after that, the score was 2 to 0 and the Lionesses proceeded to make plenty goals until the score was 5 to 0 and they’d won the game.

Unfortunately, for Northern Ireland, the results were far from what they’d hoped; the team was booted from the competition.

The Lionesses will now go into the last eight since they had won all three of their games so far without conceding a single goal. England will now take on either Denmark or Spain in the quarter-finals which will be held next Wednesday.
