In England schools are shutting down because they can’t keep the students safe from the heatwave. Last week teachers were required to check the forecast and cancel any activities that required exertion.

England is facing their hottest week in history with 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Monday looks to be the hottest day, reaching 37.1 degrees Celsius in Wales. Students in Wales have been asked to wear their breathable PE kit to stay cool instead of their traditional uniform; their outdoor activities have also been cancelled. “At school we’ve had movie time in the shade during breaks, had ice lollies, the teachers have misted us with water, and we’ve kept hydrated,” a student told Newsround.

In food technology lessons at Kings Charles I Primary School, ovens have been banned. Kids must go to nearby churches the learn in the morning. In many schools, children have also been given frozen treats and neck fans. Nine-year-old Evie from Doncaster told the BBC that her PE lessons at school had been cancelled. She said playtime is “a bit boring, but I understand that if we do run, we will get really tired and hot and sweaty.” They have cancelled many sports because of heat.

Even in the midst of all these temporary regulations, the government has still decided to keep schools open.
