July 17, 2022, a Greek cargo plane carrying weapons crashed somewhere near the city of Kavala, killing all eight people on board.

The plane was carrying 11 tons of weapons and was headed to Jordan. Nobody is allowed to go near it until it is proven safe. The pilot had requested an emergency landing at Kavala airport, but there was an engine problem and the plane didn’t make it.

The crash was noticed at about 10:45 p.m. local time by the villagers who lived there.

Aimilia Tsaptanova, who saw the plane crash, sad she was amazed that it didn’t crash into her home.

“It was full of smoke, it had a noise I can’t describe, and it went over the mountain,” she said. “It passed the mountain and turned and crashed into the fields. There were flames. We were scared. A lot of cars came, but they couldn’t approach because there were continuous explosions.”

It is unclear what weapons were on board the plane. Serbia’s Defence Minister, Nebojša Stefanovic, said there were mortar mines on board. But a director from the arms dealer said there were landmines on board. A spokesperson for Bangladesh’s military public relations office said there were mortar shells.

The captain of the plane was Meridian, and the crew was most likely Ukrainian.
